Incorporating pets into engagement photo shoots can be a fun and memorable experience for couples that I always encourage when I hear they have pets! I've been blessed to have a lot of couples with fur children, which is why I wanted to share a few tips when bringing your pup to your photo session.
Tip 1: Have a Friend or Handler Present
Bringing along a friend or family member to handle your pet can be incredibly helpful. Not only can they assist with keeping the dog under control, but they can also help to capture the dog's attention and direct their gaze towards the camera. This allows me to focus on taking the perfect shots without worrying about managing the pet. It's also essential that your pet is familiar and comfortable with the friend or family member you choose.
Tip 2: Bring Toys or Treats
Bringing your pet's favorite toy (bonus if it makes noise!) or some tasty treats can be a great way to keep them engaged and focused during the shoot. Using these items as a distraction can help direct the pet's attention toward the camera or wherever I desire for the pose, resulting in more natural and candid shots.
Tip 3: Choose the Right Location
Selecting a location that is pet-friendly and familiar to the dog can make a significant difference. However, if you are choosing an area that is new for everyone, plan to expose the pet to the location before the shoot. Letting them get familiar and acclimated in the location can help the pet feel more comfortable and at ease in this new place so that a new place, new person, and big camera all at once is not overly stimulating for them.
Tip 4: Plan for more time together
It's important to allow for extra time when working with pets during a photo shoot. I typically estimate an extra 30-40 minutes together when working with pets. Unlike human subjects, pets may need breaks, walks, or time to acclimate to the surroundings, and I like to make sure they warm up to me nicely, which may take some time for certain personalities.
Tip 5: Exercise Before the Shoot
Prior to the photo shoot, it's a good idea to ensure that the pets get plenty of exercise, especially if you tend to have high-energy dogs. A tired dog is more likely to be well-behaved and less hyperactive during the session. Taking them for a long walk or engaging in some playtime can help to burn off excess energy and result in a more relaxed and cooperative pet during the shoot.
If you're considering bringing your pet to your photo shoot, I hope you can benefit from these tips! Remember, pets (like children) feed off your energy, so the main thing to focus on is to project calm vibes and have fun! If you start with that energy, the session will be an enjoyable experience and result in beloved pictures of you and your fur babies.
